Since 2011 Helmut Gaisbauer has been a senior scientist at the Centre for Ethics and Poverty Research with  research interests in normative philosophy (poverty and poverty alleviation; absolute poverty in affluent societies; catholic social teaching and poverty alleviation) and political theory (link between poverty, identity and democracy). After studying political science in Salzburg (MA in 2001) Helmut  did a 14 months foreign civilian service at the Holocaust Memorial Majdanek/Lublin. 2002 to 2010 Helmut was a member of the Institute for Political Science at Salzburg University and the Salzburg Centre for European Union Studies holding a Pre Doc (2002-2006, PhD in 2006) and a PostDoc (2006-2010) position.

Helmut is managing the study supplement program “Poverty and Social Exclusion” and the community based learning program “Social Commitment” (together with Günter Jäger from the University Parish Salzburg).
