Research Project: Research in fundamental poverty in Romania

What are the obstacles that hinder Roma children from poor neighbourhoods to even start a promising school career? How to support such children on their way through primary school? How to lift school attendance? Obviously such questions do not have one clear cut and easy going answer. They instead lead straight into the painful reality of multidimensional poverty and social exclusion in contemporary Europe. CEPR validates efforts of an anti-poverty after school programme in Dumbraveni/Romania by way of closely and long-term monitoring and accompanying and by researching into the structural obstacles and dilemmas. Some results or insights are more lessons in hopelessness than sources for smart advice. On the other hand it is really fascinating to experience the vibrant day-to-day work and to see how the programme offers the children a kind of supplementary home with resonance and recognition.
