Centre for Ethics and Poverty Research

STUDY SUPPLEMENT: POVERTY AND SOCIAL EXCLUSION

The Centre for Ethics and Poverty Research offers an interdisciplinary study supplement program on "Poverty and Social Exclusion" to all interested students. This program has a special focus on ethics and combines this with thematic courses in social geography, sociology, (social) law and history. It aims at offering insights into the causes, different forms and often fatal consequences of poverty and social exclusion. Teaching scientific approaches to poverty and poverty alleviation is one goal of this program. Generating reliable insights and empathy, resisting ideological attitudes (individualization, blame shifting, othering and stereotyping), building commitment and enhancing solidarity and advocacy are the other goals of this study program. This study supplement provides the opportunity to cultivate appropriate skills, but also attitudes in terms of a humanitarian ideal of education.

Students who successfully complete the program (2 modules, 8 classes) receive a special study supplement certificate. Also, upon request the study supplement is referred in the final degree certificate. Start is possible any time. Please contact helmut.gaisbauer@sbg.ac.at for enrollment and further information.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM: SOCIAL Engagement

With its partner KHG (University Parish Salzburg) the Centre for Ethics and Poverty Research offers a community based learning experience for students in Salzburg. The main idea of this program called “Social Engagement” is to incite students to get involved into practical assistance to people in poverty or social exclusion in Salzburg. By way of an accompanying lecture and reflective meetings the program aims at connecting the students' real life experiences with their academic work and education.
Students do a minimum of 20 hours at a social institution of their choice, attend a lecture from the study supplement program “Poverty and Social Exclusion" and take part in four reflective seminars in the course of the winter term. They complete their program by writing a reflective essay.

In a special event, the directing team hands out certificates confirming the successful completion of this community based learning program. In many cases completion of this program means just the starting of long-lasting personal commitment! Thank you all for that!

The next program starts in October 2017. Please contact helmut.gaisbauer@sbg.ac.at for enrollment and further information.
